Ball State University - Center for Media Design

Muncie, IN

The Center for Media Design was a dark storage area within the Ball Telecommunications Building. The area was redesigned with the addition of a large clerestory lighting area, and a new curtain wall for as much natural light as possible. A mezzanine was constructed for work space for staff and visiting professionals.

Unlike traditional campus work environments, where people are segmented in departments and closed-door offices and labs, the Center for Media Design borrows design ideas from private sector technology firms, where space is open and flexible to facilitate creative collaboration. Digital resources are available to "play with" in a whole new kind of research and development activity.

The iCommunications Initiative seeks to embrace opportunities for students and faculty to develop expertise in digital communication through three primary areas: the Center for Media Design, the Global Media Network, and the Media Studies Program. The primary engine of iCommunications focuses on digital content research and development, testing and assessment of new technologies, and commercial partnerships. Program areas engender high-quality digital art, entertainment, or news. Teaching programs link state-of-the-art design technology to media and communications fields

The Center for Media Design is sowing the seeds of programs that will bear the fruit of innovative expression and new opportunities in digital media applications for education, industry and communities.
