Indiana University Southeast Library

New Albany, IN

MSKTD partnered with Shepley Bulfinch Richardson & Abbott of Boston for the design of this 75,000-gsf new freestanding library facility for the Indiana University Southeast campus in New Albany, Indiana.

The design uses the same brick, copper roofs and limestone accents to create a new look that is sympathetic to the vernacular of the campus. The undulating campus topography creates site challenges that force most of the buildings to become multi-level with internal circulation being a strong design factor. This strong circulation factor was something that became a major element within the library. The strong axis running the length of the building was central to circulation and became a means along which major functional areas of the Library are located. Library functions are visible and accessible from this axis. The goal was to make it easy for patrons to identify the Circulation and Reference Desks, Photocopy Room, Computer Classroom, Collections and Study areas arranged along this defining element.

Key features of the Library are the large quantities of glazing in the building which allow numerous areas for viewing the campus in all directions, as well as the distant views of the western hills. The large glass skylights and clerestory atriums also provide natural light deep inside the building. Other features include:

bullet A 30 station computer classroom for bibliographic instruction.
bullet Seating for 476 students, faculty, staff, and community visitors provided in a variety of settings.
bullet Tables and chairs, soft seating and carrels, in areas for individual and group study.
bullet Lounge space for coffee, snacks and informal internet access or casual conversation without distracting the library patrons.
