Heasley Residence
Fort Wayne, IN
This project is a 1,000 s.f. interior renovation of a private residence located in Devil's Hollow on the city's southwest side. Included is a 450 s.f. kitchen suite, 325 s.f. dining room, and a 225 s.f. TV lounge. The new owners of the home, which was originally designed by now MSKTD architect Rich Wismer in 1990, wished to enlarge and update the relatively small kitchen and dinette into a kitchen suite complete with gathering areas and a real wood-burning fireplace.
The existing space was completely gutted, including the adjacent 150 s.f. screened-in deck on the south point of the house, which accommodated the expansion. During the design process, the project grew to include changing the existing family room to a new dining room and converting the existing dining room into a new TV lounge. A gas-burning fireplace structure that was within the family room was transformed into a bar flanked by display cabinets with sliding glass french doors and a play loft above for the owner's young children. The existing built-ins that were part of the dining room were rotated 180 degrees to remain a part of the relocated dining room.
Hand-selected natural slate slabs were utilized in all three spaces, unifying the composition. The existing white birch woodwork and naturally finished maple plank ceilings were further extended into the new kitchen suite. The maple plank flooring provides a visual balance to the naturally finished dark wenge cabinets. The cabinets, with granite and stainless steel countertops, include many features such as pull-out pantries, roll-out trays, utility, cutlery and spice tray drawers, kitchenware and plate organizer drawers, and slide-out waste and recycle bins.
